Special Investigator Ella Clah of the Navajo Tribal Police sorts out a literally puzzling crime and some personal difficulties in her 12th mystery. The shooting death of Jimmy Blacksheep, a National Guardsman newly home from Iraq, at first seems just the latest in a recent series of carjackings, but later evidence suggest that the murder might have more to do with the other members of his unit and a strange coded manuscript the victim left behind. Meanwhile, Ella must also come to terms with her mother's engagement and her ex-husband's attempts to disrupt their daughter's custody arrangements.
