Meg Gardner, a tough girl with a checkered past, returns to her hometown of Missoula, Montana, and becomes a repo-lady. She accidentally stumbles into a mystery after repossessing a Jeep belonging to one Clay Bennett, a pilot. It seems that Clay (who is murdered right around the time that Meg repossesses his car) may have been in possession of some sort of treasure map, and everybody in Missoula's surprisingly robust underworld wants to get hold of it. The fact that Meg is in possession of Clay's briefcase makes her a hot commodity. To complicate things further, one of the suspects in Clay's murder is a young Native American woman named Red Deer, who may or may not be Meg's illegitimate half-sister.
