Chief Inspector Alan Banks, who narrowly escaped death when his home was burned down by an arsonist in the previous book, continues to face significant personal troubles in the 15th of a British police mystery series. A woman is discovered inside her car, shot through the head, with Banks’s address in her pocket. Detective Inspector Annie Cabbot, who’s in charge of the case, would very much like to talk to Banks about it. Unfortunately, Banks himself is otherwise occupied, unofficially investigating the disappearance of his brother Roy, a less than reputable London businessman who vanished after a cryptic but desperate phone call to Banks.
