Yet this is no doomsday tract-with all our problems are many possible ways to fix them. About the Author: Thomas Roatch is a quintessential American. He was born in the Midwest and came from a poor farming family. His family had 12 kids, so it wasn't an easy life. His parents divorced when Tom was 10; his mother became the provider and raised the kids the best that she could, usually working 2 jobs and not having much free time. Tom moved to the Twin Cities with his family at 14 and joined the Army right after high school. He traveled and lived in Europe and all over this great country of ours. Tom claims he wrote The American Problem 'because I was raised never to complain about anything unless you had a solution for that problem.
