In the early part of the 20th century, two orphans--Lewis Tully and M.J. Shelby--run away and join the circus, and spend their lives working in a series of broken-down, dead-end outfits. Years later, Tully gets together the best performers from his long life in the business and starts his own, called the Blue Moon Circus. They tour the West and, improbably, become a hit--and Tully even reconnects with his long-lost great love, the beautiful Helen.
