The days of Model-T Fords, the Whippet car, and iceboxes… Grist mills, “Home Comfort Ranges,” and a large copper pot on a fire outdoors for making apple butter… Carrying water from a spring and building a fire under a big black pot for washing clothes, using homemade lye soap and a washboard… Setting tobacco plants by hand and later “handing it off”… Hog killing time… Eight grades of school in a one-room schoolhouse… On rare occasions a bag full of candy for a nickel… A newly-wed couple separated by World War II… Putting your name on a waiting list to buy household appliances after the war… Asheville, North Carolina, how it was back then… Reading of these activities and experiences may bring back memories for some and cause younger folks to be grateful for modernization.
