In this inspirational, semi-autobiographical novel, Jan, who is troubled by conflicts in her family, turns to her dead grandmother, Hannah, for support. She then shares the narration with Hannah in an exploration of Jan's life story from the 1960s through adulthood, as she grows up in an African-American community and goes on to a career as a disk jockey.
