Two bookstore customers--Josephina and Ross--want to buy the same book, the store's only copy, and to solve the dilemma, the wise old proprietor, Miss Cozy, suggests that they take turns reading it aloud to each other. The book is the journal of a slave named Iona, and in the process of reading it aloud they discover not only its relevance to their own lives, but the beginnings of a romantic relationship.
