The Queen's Closet Opened was written in three volumes: 'The Pearl of Practice' which covers medical remedies; 'A Queen's Delight' which examines confectionery; and 'The Compleat Cook' which looks at general culinary recipes. The Compleat Cook Expertly Prescribing the Most Ready Wayes, Whether Italian, Spanish or French, for Dressing of Flesh and Fish, Ordering Of Sauces or Making of Pastry was first published during the reign of Oliver Cromwell. The book was an immediate success. Historians have speculated that after the fall of the monarchy many talented chefs would have lost their jobs and have been looking for a means to support themselves. Publishing a cookbook was a way to earn some money.
